Thanks to your solutions. I got CAT control to work late last night!
Apparently I did need to be added to the dialout group ? Once I did that
and rebooted everything just worked. I'm very impressed too at how well
Ubuntu runs on this old machine compared to Windows XP. I will have to buy
some books/tutorials on Linux-Ubuntu so I bother you folks a little less
with stupid novice questions. Thanks again to thos of you who helped.

Hey - I “resemble" that remark! Anyhow, you might want to give Lubuntu a try after you get used to Linux a bit. Your machine will run even better, and the interface will be more familiar.

I going to throw in a plug for Opensuse with XFCE or LXDE instead of Gnome or KDE.

I agree with Mike, Lubuntu is slick, fast and no bloatware. You can
always burn a live DVD to see what its about.

Like everything else Linux, the documentation is user maintained and
free. These two links will provide you with enough reading to keep you
occupied in the loo for at least a year!

If I might politicise a bit, the best thing Microsoft ever did for me was come out with Windows 8.

But that isn’t my main thought. While I had dabbled in Linux before, installing it on a few machines to see what was going on, W8 and Dave’s multiple OS programs got me completely hooked on Linux.

I seriously haven’t had this much fun with computers since my old Amiga days.

Anyhow, one more note to Richard is keep asking questions. No one was born an expert, and you don’t want to miss out on the fun. After you get a few miles under your belt, it’s a blast.

Oops, I’ve fallen into cheerleader mode.

Hey Mike, post a photo of yourself on QRZ.com. It's nice to put a face
to the words.

Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions for reading material,
different versions of Linux, and of course the cheerleading which I really
needed after a rough night trying to get Gpredict, Hamlib and my ft847 to
get along.,I finally gave up and went to bed, but not after buying a
beginners Kindle book for Ubuntu from amazon :).

I'll be away from this computer for a week as today we drive home for a
week before returning to the lake. Maybe the down time will be good and
give me time to read up a bit more and burn a DVD of Lubuntu which a number
on this list and from contacts on the amsat have suggested.

If I can just get this satellite tracking situation solved I'm in business.
By the way, is there a logging program that talks to a radio CAT Port? And
if so can it be running at the same time as another program such as
Gpredict that is accessing the CATport? At the home station I'm using a
virtual serial port emulator and virtual audio cables so possibilities are
nearly limitless.

73 everyone and tnx again for the cheerleading!

I use CQRLog under opensue 13.1. I know it will read the radio's frequency, but I don't know about other control.

FLDigi has a log. You can control the frequency from the program.

Until I read your post, I didn't know Gpredict had CAT controls. I'll have to look into that. Thanks.
