Not Good Experience with Hamlib or Flrig

I have a 12-13 year old Dell computer that was running XP. I installed
Ubuntu in hopes of reviving it. Cannot get CAT control of FT847. Spent days
working with both HamLib and Flrig and no dice. Tried a Keyspan Serial-USB
converter and still no CAT control. Tried commands through XTerm and it
doesn't seem to be reaching the 847. I admit to be a real novice at Linux
but I'm up against a wall on this after 3 days of many hours of trail and
error and advice from several far more experienced. Anyone out there help
or am I doomed to give up on Linux?

Well first of all, a box that old needs something other than Ubuntu.
I'm suprised you can get anything to run. I would suggest either
Lubuntu or Xubuntu.

Have you added yourself to the dialout group ?

You might spend some time in the help files as well as the wiki.

Install calibre and download free or low cost ebooks on Linux. I found
several on Amazon for 99 cents.

Not sure your experienced help was much help at all.

Did you do any searching in linuxham ? After 8 years there is a lot of
good info if you just look.

I have one like that and it would work just fine if I have more memory,
if it has more than
1 gig it might be OK, on mine I loaded puppy Lucid 5.2.8 and the Fldigi
suite and it works
just fine. I also didn't have an issue with the permissions of the
Ubuntu and its flavors.

Hi

On Ubuntu and other flavors of *buntu you have to add yourself to the
dialout group.

Copied from a web page/

/add/ yourself to /dialout group/ and logout/login: sudo /adduser/
$/USER/ dialout.

The $USER is you login ID, the log out and back in allows you
environment to take on the new
permissions.

Marty's commands weren't quite right... They have slashes in them that
shouldn't be there. From a command line, to add yourself to the dialout
group (if it hasn't been done already):

sudo adduser $user dialout

Replace $user with your user name. Then, as Marty said, log out then back
in again and you should now have control of your serial port.

Once logged in, open a terminal and type: dmesg

You should get a lot of information. Towards the bottom of that output you
should see info about your usb > serial adapter, including what port it is
assigned to. It will be something like /dev/ttyUSBx (where x is a number).
That will be the port you will use in the FLRig settings

Hi

I am sorry about the slashes, they didn't show up in Thunderbird during
composition.

Your syntax is incorrect. This has been asked and answered many many
times here. A little research would provide the correct information.
There are several ways to add yourself to a group.
Post by Marty Hartwell mhartwe-***@public.gmane.org [linuxham]
From a terminal, you can enter the following command
$ sudo adduser (username) dialout
Substitute your login name for (username)

You can check to be sure that you are now a member of the dialout group with the command:

$ groups
which should respond with the full list of groups you belong to.

There are also Graphical User Interface tools that perform the same basic function. On Lubuntu this is the "users-admin" command which is usually found on the Lubuntu menu item "System Tools | Users and groups". You can of course start that tool from the command line

$ sudo users-admin
sudo is used for all of these modifications to ensure that you have the
correct read/write privilege for the files that will be changed. You
may need to log out and log back in again for the change to take effect.

THANK YOU SO MUCH

I added myself to the adduser on two computers and now both of my adapter work one with the prolific and the other with a moschip.

I really think this may be 75% of the USB to serial port adatper problems that people run into.

The "$ sudo adduser username dialout" should be the first thing for anyone to try.

I have been trying for days.

Thanks
Carlos

Good to hear you are up and running. Adding yourself to dialout probably
gets more people by 95%. It happens more often than not. Sad thing tho,
its been on the wiki under HOWTOS for quite a long while.
