+1 for f-droid. FOSS, nice, quiet upgrades.
Just added http://www.mobogenie.com/
It's a little more, . . . "aggressive" I suppose. Also has a low signal
to noise ratio in that there are many many apps, so necessarily fewer of
relevance. It also suggested updates for a number of system Android
components, or silenced Google-y apps (I don't actually like G., just
much of Android.) For those I'd probably be happier with a system update.
It's a bit like http://www.getjar.com/
There is http://store.yandex.com/ in .ru
http://www.appsapk.com/ is a site, not sure if you'd categorize it as a
store, however . . . one may download from it (just found a QNAP file
manager there to try.)
NB One may download apks/apps from the Google store/Play with this site.
http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/
This is pretty cool. I've only used the web page, vs downloading their
app. However have used it on computer (desktop, netbook) to easily type,
download, then scan the files. Have also used it on my phone's web
browser. Add a file manager and one is able to install downloaded
apps/apks anyway.

the "Play Store" won't allow because my device is not
compatible. In particular Navfree USA and Map Factor.
The above site cites that as a fine example of it's use.

compatible with my device, but seems to work fine.

I found Navit (on F-Droid) to be pretty good.
Also http://www.navit-project.org/
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Navit
Like Navfree USA it uses OSM map tiles. The only drawbacks thus far are
apparent high current use
and tiny road name text size. I'm hoping to get them to adjust both.
Used it for turn by turn nav in England. Great alternative to networked
mapping apps as we were sometimes out of 3G coverage (with the navigator
chanting, "3G, 3G" and switching between paper and the "GPS"/"SatNav".
