fldigi psk31 on ubuntu - decoding garbage

I have installed fldigi on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64 bit, trying to decode BPSK31. It's just decoding garbage. An example line:

7
 7
 TeeEG!U( (!f5€ W€ ye˜G!5(

I am routing audio from radio, then to eliminate any doubt, I simply used sample wav files from internet with psk31 data in. Squelch is set correctly, sound levels are correct.

After first install it didn't work, then I rebooted and it worked, now a day later it is back to it's old behaviour. In the mean time I've been installing more things on this new machine.

I have no idea if this is a conflict with libraries, simply a setting that is wrong in the options?

I have installed the official one from the ubuntu ppa (slightly older version), and also compiled from source 3.21.83. All the same.

I can decode CW ok.

I can't find anyone else experiencing similiar problems from internet searching.

Anyone got any ideas?

Further to my previous post, I can see repeated patterns of characters coming up, which I think at CQ and 73 and <CR><LF> seems to be triggering.

I have Rx/Tx character set at utf-8, I've tried ASCII but no difference, still rubbish.

I'm a bit clueless as to what I'm doing to get it working. The fact it didn't work, then it worked for a bit, now it doesn't work, is puzzling!

Which audio type are you using on the Sound Card config page in FLDIGI?
You set the Sound Card to File I/O for your WAV test?

Incase anyone else gets stuck with this and comes to this post in the future...

It turned out to be pulse audio related. Something strange with my onboard soundcard. Works fine with usb external soundcard.

I would be interested in seeing what your waterfall looked like. I use
pulseaudio with my onboard sound card without issue but I did build a
homebrew digital interface that includes audio pots for TX and RX. I always
try to leave the pulseaudio volume set to 100% on both and use the pots to
adjust levels.

That's why I asked my question. Pulse can be a bear.
