I'm new to Linux and to this group so pardon the novice question.
I just made an external boot disc and gave Lubuntu a whirl and the
suggestion of many ham operators I've had email exchanges with.

Question 1 - I'd now like to install Lubuntu on an external drive to allow
me to boot from that. Is that an option given during the install process
from the DVD? I don't want to go too far as I don't yet want to install it
on my internal laptop drive.

Question 2 - using Lubuntu I did a search for available ham radio software
and didn't find much. FlDigi wasn't even on the list. I'm i looking in the
wrong place?

Thanks for the support I get here.

Good place to find Lubuntu specific help:

Open Synaptic and browse the Amateur Radio section.

Someone mentioned Synaptic, which is the best choice. I’ve been messing with so many distros that IIIRC, lubuntu comes with a Lubuntu software center instead of Synaptic.

So if you need to, DL Synaptic Package manager with the Lubuntu software Center. After installing, Synaptic will show a lot of Ham radio software.

The fldigi package is reasonably recent, and will get you working.

Eventually as you get more used to lubuntu, you can learn to compile from source. I do recommend the Synaptics method first, because there is a fair amount extra that goes on getting lubuntu ready to compile. Dave has excellent info on site, and we can get you rolling.

As for installing it to an external drive, that will depend on your BIOS, and I suspect the install process might let you know if lubuntu will handle external booting.

Rick , May I suggest you install synaptic ,via the command line ,like so: $
sudo apt-get install synaptic.
Having done that you should find synaptic in the Lubuntu applications list
,click and run it ....or from the command line you run $ sudo synaptic.
The left hand panel shows plenty of amateur radio applications

Good Luck

Frank - does Synaptic run better when installed from the command line?

Hi Rick ,
No, there is no difference ,but if following installation of any app you
canÂŽt find the app in a GUI Menu ,starting the app from the command line is
a quick alternative.

If you get used to the command line , starting any application from the
command line become second nature . Learning to operate through the CLI
is a faster Linux learning experience.

For example try to start Firefox through the CLI or any other app like so
: $ firefox

Applications like synaptic and gparted ,when started need the
administratorÂŽs password ,hence when invoked via the CLI the command is $
sudo <app> The user/administrator will subsequently need to provide
his/her password ,before the app will run .

Go for it

HI Rick

All of the responses you have gotten so far are good ones on getting SM
loaded to see more Ham Radio
related software. One thing that users of SM have to do that isn't real
obvious is that once loaded and
you use it the first time, you need to click the reload button on the
left top side of the screen. That gets
all of the latest software list into you brand new Synaptic Manager. It
is a good idea to do this whenever
you want to look for new applications to try also.
