Stop me if this is all old hat to you, but --

a) I think there is more to making a flash-drive bootable than just
dropping the dot-iso onto it. See the info here:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ for the steps to make your dot-iso
bootable,

b) You need to adjust your BIOS settings to make the USB bootable in
preference to the HD, and

c) (This one was waaay more subtle --) my Dell laptop BIOS wouldn't even
offer USB as a boot-option until it noticed a bootable flash drive
attached. I thought my laptop wasn't going to be able to boot from
flash until I stumbled across this bit.

Assuming the Compaq bios allows booting from usb, You need a utility
like unetbootin to convert the iso9660 format to an image and create the
boot sector and root partition.

If the bios doesn't permit it, it will be necessary to do as Marty kd8bj
suggests.

unetbootin also creates a boot menu to allow device selection on boot.

Some Laptops don't have the option in bios to boot from USB. In that
case you will have to burn the software from
Andy to a CD and set the bios to have the first boot device to be the
CD, then it will boot and load in RAM and run.
You can then have a USB disk to save you Puppy files and setup to that
for the next boot. After you get the Puppy
loaded you then download and install, using puppy application manager,
the fldigi applications you wish to use. I
use fldigi and flrig at the moment but you can also load them all.

Hope this helps.

I was having an issue with getting PL and lubuntu to boot on an eepc, and it turns out that on that, there is only one “direct” usb port.

Apparently, it is typically the one next to the Ethernet port. Where I got the advice, they said it was like that on a lot of laptops. I don’t know about that, but I do know that when plugged into the one beside the ethernet port, it would indeed boot.

Try it, won’t take but a minute or two to find out if it will work for you or not.

By the way, lubuntu is also a minimalist distro if you are lacking power.

I boot Puppy Linux LH64 from USB on this 64-bit laptop every day.

Did you ask on the Puppy Linux Forum?

They are generally very helpful there - have been for the nearly
10 years I've been using Puppy.
