I upgraded my desktop to Linux mate 17.
I had to do a fresh install a of all of the FL*** software.
I followed the documentation at
https://fedorahosted.org/fldigi/wiki/Documentation/HOWTO/Mint_installation
but I was having a issue with the installation not completing due to a
missing file. libxmlrpc-c3-dev

Using Google and Bing I found out that I needed to add a universe repository
http://www.installion.co.uk/ubuntu/saucy/universe/l/libxmlrpc-c3-dev/install.html

as soon as I added it to the sources list bingo I was able to install
the software.

If this has already be address I apologize in advance.

Hi Mike

Interesting - I wonder if that file is already in the Cinnamon version. I might try an install on my wife’s laptop, which is on Cinnamon Mint.

Always sumpin.

I have the exact same file and version using the sources list from the
wiki. I'm wondering why, if you used the same, it didn't install the
file when you ran sudo build-dep fldigi.

This is on mint 13.

Mint 17 is only 4 better than Mint 13, I'm waiting for Mint 21 as that
will be 8 better!

With Mint 13 LTS support running till 2017 I don't feel the burning

Hi all,

I have used FLdigi for a couple of years in contests but I export the
log file in ADIF format to my own log program where I generate log
outputs for Cabrillo LOTW Clublog etc. Because of this I have never
used or explored the Reports / Cabrillo output in FLdigi.
Now a friend of mine has been persuaded to try FLdigi (convert from
Mixcw) but is lost in producing a Cabrillo file. The last contest was
the Digifest but we could not find a template for it and the words just
said "Select the Contest type from the pull down menu in the right
panel. Fldigi knows how to format the various fields for each contest".
Is there a source of templates for various contest to import that I am
not aware of.
For this last contest I did a lot of editing to get the right format but
this compared to MIXCW is a retrograde step and I am sure is wrong.

Any and all pointers welcome

A little background on the Cabrillo in fldigi. The header can be edited
to suit your needs. The ones shown are the more popular contests. When
Dave went to add the Cabrillo file, I volunteered to find a free, open
source version. What I found was that any standalone, was payfor or not
open source. I finally stumbled across what is used in fldigi.

Now, I looked at the template for the digifest from here:

http://www.rigexpert.com/index?f=digifest

START-OF-LOG: 2.0
CALLSIGN: UX1UA *
CATEGORY: SINGLE-OP ALL HIGH 24H *
CONTEST: DIGIFEST
CREATED-BY: MixW 3.1.1
NAME: Sergei Litvinov *
ADDRESS: P.O.Box 111 *
ADDRESS: Kyiv 01001 *
ADDRESS: UKRAINE *
E-MAIL: ux1ua-FD1omRm+***@public.gmane.org *
OPERATORS: *

Of course you would need to edit the header to follow the above. But
I'm not sure the modes they want in the log will be supported in
fldigi. The Cabrillo standard is RY,PH,CW. I would just pick a template
and use that to see if the log section is correct before I edited the
header.

There are many contests that do not follow the norm, you just have to
edit the Cabrillo to your needs.

Linux badly, I mean badly needs the equivalent of N1MM contest logger.

I see people trying contesting in programs like HRD, and fldigi, and I
cringe a little.

Also, as the chairman of the PAQSO party, I've seen the amazing
inconsistency of so-called Cabrillo files from all the programs out there.

If I could just talk the N1MM people into making a Linux version, life
would be good.

There are some practical considerations for me also. Our contest station
with it's network is nearing replacement time. 5 hard-worked computers,
right now running XP will need replaced in the near future. But we run
N1MM, and I've already informed them I won't support Windows 8 (ptui!)

I just don't think programs like fldigi are built for contesting. Then
again, contesting spftware isn't at all built to do the things fldigi does.

Linux badly, I mean badly needs the equivalent of N1MM contest logger.
Sadly, fldigi, xlog, and tlf are about the only choices. A few years ago
in several off list emails, a person said he was going to fork fldigi
and make it a full blown contest program. Well that went no where.

I don't know about HRD, but I will differ on your opinion of fldigi.
Dave included "BASIC" contest features to fldigi at my constant
whining. If you set it up right, other than scoring, fldigi does a
decent job. I'm looking at my 1st place certificate, 4th call area,
single band, low power, CQWW RTTY WPX.

Depends how it is coded in the software and whether or not the correct
guidelines were followed. In the case of fldigi they are and have been.

I noticed that 17 still has issues with laptop touchpads. they don't want
ot right click except in a teeny weenie lower right hand corner area.

There are workarounds, but I don't see Grandma doing them.

Otherwise, It's an attractive OS, and should satisfy both Grandma and a
serious user.

I have Mint 15 on my Ham radio laptop, 17 on my better half's touchscreen
laptop. Both work FB, although I don't see myself being in a hurry to
update my laptop Obviously if I was doing a new install it would be 17.

I've never used a Mate version of Mint - anyone know the differences?

I just installed yesterday. Still setting up. I tried the cinn version of linux mint and I did not like my video card. Mint mate had no issue so far with the card. Mint mate 13 was upgrade to 17 only because I was using a live cd to test and I installed it accidentally.

I have used the fldigi Cabrillo Reports for several contests and it has been great. I learned the hard way it is always a good thing before a contest begins to make a few dummy QSO’s and pull a Cabrillo report. The purpose is to check that your macros are working correct your are logging the exchanges in the correct boxes. Get a copy of the contest rules and look up the required Cabrillo format and double check that your sample looks correct.

Another tip is during the contest take a break and save a Cabrillo report to check that QSO’s are being logged correct. It is easy at that point to use scroll back buffer to double check exchanges are call signs that do not look correct in the Cabrillo report.

The bottom line is a lot of hard work went into logging contest Q’ and the fldigi Cabrillo Reports work great.

Remember though, at least in my case, I am responsible for networking several computers, and some of the users have had problems with other logging programs using CW. Sometimes extra characters, sometimes one gets truncated. So much more stuff - which is why I really want a program like N1MM for Linux.

Running a contest station with multiple radios and operators, and having all those synch up is a lot different than a single user.

If fldigi works for you, great. It just isn’t what I need.

This isn’t even a diss on fldigi. I wouldn’t take my jeep to the dragstrip, and I wouldn’t ride my Honda Shadow 1100 on dirt. Just different programs and/or things doing what they do best.
