[OT] ubuntu, java and websdr.org

Hi,
ubuntu has dropped sun-java-6 support due to licensing issues.
They also disabled the plugin due to security issues.
So I'm now trying once again openjdk-6 and icedtea (the plugin for firefox).
I get no audio. There are similar reports around, and the only
solution they offer is
to install sun-java. Gee, thanks....
So, is there some magic recipe to get icedtea/openjdk to work properly
and give audio
output when visiting one of the websdr.org sites?
I'm not using pulseaudio on this pc (too slow), just plain alsa.

I'm using Debian unstable which may have a newer version of OpenJDK
installed, but I am able to listen to the WebSDR of K2SDR without an
issue other than there seems to be a 4 kHz frequency error on 20m.

I have installed:

openjdk-6 6b24~pre2-1
icedtea-plugin 1.1.4-1

plus whatever dependencies are required. I am not using PulseAudio on
this machine. I wonder if there is an OpenJDK PPA available to you?

If there is one, they've hidden it very well!

I don't see that package. I have:

icedtea-6-jre-jamvm
icedtea-netx
icedtea-netx-common
icedtea-plugin

the icedtea-6-jre-cacao is not installed on my system.

Could be as it is described as "...an alternative runtime using the
Cacao VM and the Cacao Just In Time Compiler (JIT)." Which means
nothing to me as I generally don't care for Java and its five dozen
permutations. I only have this installed for brain dead sites that
insist on a Java plugin for some functionality. Fortunately, they have
become much fewer in recent years.

Thanks, that seems easy enough. I'd like a .deb installer (sort of
what is done for flashplugin), so that I'm automatically remembered to
upgrade when need be, though.

And this page: http://www.duinsoft.nl/packages.php?t=en
does exactly what I want. A .deb installer for the binary distribution
from java.com.
websdr works again, vnaJ seems to work too.

Uhm no thanks. Compiling fldigi and other radio related stuff is fun.
Compiling things that should be key components of the desktop is work.

Sun and the opensource community have a silly little disagrement about
something quite obscure to us normal users. You can just go to java.com and
download the VM or the whole SDK (which have the libs for building from source)
and install following the instructions... without issues. There is no problems
with security unless you are running everything as root.
