Running ubuntu 14.04 with Fldigi and Flrig, FTDX 1200 & SCU 17.

Have rig control, waterfall, decoding but need to figure out how to set up to operate RTTY.

What arrangements are used to operate RTTY with this equipment?

Thanks for your post Ed.

The SCU 17 is a box Yaesu makes to interface their radios to a PC. They say: "The FT DX 1200 can be connected to a PC with a USB cable through the use of an optional SCU-17 Interfeace Unit. This unit will support CAT, USB Audio In/Out, TX control (PTT, Key, Shift), and firmware updates."

I was hoping someone actually using this equipment could help me by describing what worked for them.

There is a very good how-to here:

Except for the 1st cable and the last one, the setup is identical to
my FT-950. Looks to me that you use either the USB or the serial cable
for cat control. The connection cable is all you will need to run
fldigi. PTT is via the software in flrig. You will probably need to
read the rig's manual on what menu items need to be set to use digital.

Yes, I have the connections per the references you sent. USB from PC to SCU 17, RS232 & other cable SCU 17 to rig, like they show. Rig control working ok.

Having the FT-950, maybe you can answer a couple questions.
When running RTTY what mode do you have the rig in?
How do you set the output level?

You don't need both the 232 and the USB, if I'm reading it right you
only need the USB.. You will also need to install the 6 pin cable.

Open both fldigi and flrig. In flrig select PKT-U, and 2400 for the
bandwidth, these settings should now also be in the fldigi main
window. Set flrig for 100 watts output. Select 20 meters. In the lower
right corner of fldigi there is a window just to the left of the
diamond. Set that for -6.0. Upper right of fldigi click the tune and
flrig should show 100 watts out, if not you need to adjust the tx out on
the scu box. In the power/swr box in flrig with fldigi in tune, right
click and observe the ALC setting. Adjust the tx attentuator (the -6
box) until there is no more than 1 or 2 ALC bars. You will make all tx
out from that box. Mine is set at -11 for 70 watts out and 0 ALC. Now
the problem is the SCU box, I use a signalink and my tx is set at 2
o'clock as well as the rx. You will need to fine tune both settings.

When you are comfortable with your setup, let me know and I'll show
you some neat tricks for the 1200.

Don't see a PKT-U setting in Flrig. Maybe you meant Data-U. When I select that the Flrig program closes.

You will need to use DATA U, open a terminal and start flrig from
there. Just type in flrig and hit enter. We need to see what errors
there are when you select DATA U.

Next from a terminal enter lsusb and post the output back to me.

Open fldigi and under configure select select sound card and check the
pulse audio box. Make sure you save and close.

Agan from a terminal:

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

This is the volume control manager for pulse audio. Open it and select
usb audio codec in the 1st 2 tabs, and set the next 2 tabs to 100%,
make sure you are using the usb audio codec.

This should give you the basic setup.

fldigi will need to use the DATA U mode. When all of the above is done
open fldigi and flrig and lets hope all is well.

I discovered that if fldigi is not open, flrig can put the rig in data-u and flrig stays open;
if fldigi is open and flrig is asked to put the rig in data-u the rig goes into data-u but flrig immediately closes.

I conclude that this behavior has something to do with fldigi.

I did have the pulse audio control and think it was set correctly.

Yep, fldigi is the problem, how did you install both fldigi and flrig ?
I installed fldigi 3.21.80 and flrig 1.3.15. Looking at http://www.w1hkj.com/download.html http://www.w1hkj.com/download.html I see I should be at fldigi 3.21.82.

I downloaded and installed fldigi with Ubuntu graphical package manager but found flrig was not available this way.

Being a Ubuntu newbie I was not sure how to install flrig. Finally found some installation instructions at
http://www.hamradioandvision.com/installing-flrig-for-ubuntu/ http://www.hamradioandvision.com/installing-flrig-for-ubuntu/ which helped me thru it.

I also found some advice on rig menu settings on the yahoo group for ftdx-1200. I made these changes in settings although I don't know if they all were needed:

It seems that FlDigi and Windows (tm) don't want to play together. Using a port monitor it became obivious that the preferred way of keying the rig using RTS/DTR didn't work. (the serial coms bit works, but the control pins do not seem to play). I gave up trying to find who's fault it was!

Anyway, after hours of playing I came up with settings that work!
Rather than describe them, I have uploaded screenshots of the relevant FlDigi configuration pages to the files area.

In addition to these settings various things have to be changed on the FTdx1200.

I use a serial data rate of 38,400bps so:
039 CAT Rate =38400
in addition I set:
040 CAT TimeOut = 1000ms
041 CAT RTS = Disable

The important one is:
180 VOX SELECT =DATA

I turned the VOX gain up to maximum. This means the rig will key up at about 2W when adjusting the TX Level on the SCU-17
180 VOX GAIN=100

Hope this helps!

Guess I should try to uninstall fldigi and re install with fldigi 3.21.82.

Well lets work on that first. You can learn to install from source or
use Kamal's PPA.

https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/fldigi

or

http://www.w1hkj.com/LaunchpadInstall.html

either one will update fldigi/flrig. Personally learning to build from
source is thw way to go.

We are not talking MS here. The rig needs RTS/CTS for rig control. Plus
Dave has coded flrig to PTT via the software. Seems to me this person
has not bothered to read any of the documentation.

Open your file manager, under View select show hidden files and
find /.flrig and delete it. Now uninstall flrig. Double check to make
sure, open a terminal and enter "whereis flrig" and "find flrig" you
should get no response.

Now open a terminal

sudo apt-get install flrig

Open flrig, select the correct comport and baud rate. Select DATA U and
hopefully it will not crash. If your good open fldigi and it should
open to DATA U and flrig should not crash.

Bill,

Executing without fldigi, does flrig crash when the transceiver is
changed to data-u ? Please build flrig from source

You can follow the wiki instructions for your linux distribution

https://fedorahosted.org/fldigi/wiki/Documentation/HOWTO#Buildingfromsource

The instructions are for fldigi, but are sufficient also for flrig.

Then you need to execute the newly compiled flrig using the gnu
debugger. If you've never used gdb then you can come back here for
assistance. You need to do this sequence of operations from the command
line (after you have the build environment installed as per the wiki).

$ cd
$ mkdir app-src
$ cd app-src
$ wget http://www.w1hkj.com/downloads/flrig/flrig-1.3.15.tar.gz
$ tar xzf flrig-1.3.15.tar.gz
$ cd flrig-1.3.15
$ ./configure
$ make
$ script
$ gdb src/flrig
(gdb) run --debug-level 5

Configure flrig for your transceiver and then change the xcvr to
data-u. The program should return to the gdb prompt when it crashes.
At this point you want to execute the gdb command backtrace.

(gdb) bt

Then quit gdb

(gdb) quit

and terminate the "script" program

$ exit

The script program will leave the file /typescript/ in the current
working directory. Send that file to me as an attachment:

Thank you for all the help!

I followed your instructions to re install flrig from source and ran the test with gdb.
Executing without fldigi, does flrig crash when the transceiver is changed to data-u ?
No.

Here is the terminal printout from the test.

No, fldigi uses USB for all modems including RTTY. Don't worry you wont
be upside down. Also fldigi is AFSK only, unless you build an interface
as shown in the help file, then you can run psuedo-fsk.

Manual for scu-17 is at:
http://www.yaesu.com/jp/manuals/ol/SCU-17_OM_ENG_JPN_EAK21X700.pdf
Page 3 gives cable pinouts, page 5 shows system setup & cabling for ftdx-1200.

I am trying to find out if this equipment can be used with fldigi. I hoped someone actually doing it would describe their arrangenments. So far no existance proof.

I am trying to figure out the path for afsk signals for RTTY. I wonder if the audio goes from computer to scu-17 on usb cable and then from scu-17 to ftdx-1200 on data cable, data-in, and data-out. Trying to see how to set the levels for transmit.

I've already been there. The hook up for the 1200, 450, and 950 are
identical. So hook it up as shown. Start frig, fldigi. Set flrig to
DATA-U, select RTTY as the modem in fldigi.

Well if it works with the 450 and 950, why wouldn't it work with the
1200? Your losing me here Bill, if fldigi works with virtually every
interface out there, then surely you don't think this simple interface
is any different.

I'm reading as the USB provides CAT control as well as the audio, this
is on page 1. So hook it up per the diagram.

Well since they do not provide that info, I would set the scu17 for
mid-range on both in and out. Then set the audio levels in fldigi, and
teak it from there.

If you need help with the audio settings in fldigi, let me know.

I am getting that the radio has to be in data-u. Putting the radio in data-u crashes flrig. I guess it won't work out for me at this time. Thanks for all your help, I learned a lot from you.

Flrig 1.3.16 is now available, one of the changes from this appears to
be FTDx1200 mode setting related.

Problem solved. I can report that Fldigi works fine with Yaesu FTDX 1200 w SCU 17.

Here is what worked for me (thanks to Dave and Ed for all the help):

Hook up the cables per the SCU manual.

You must also use flrig to control the rig.
Rig must be run in data-U to use fldigi's afsk for RTTY.

(This is a little non-intuitive because by not running rig in RTTY you give up it's scope decoding and RTTY spectrum display & filters. It makes you think you should be running a RTTY-L FSK. But if you want to work RTTYwith this equipment out of the box without building additional interfaces, this is the way you do it. Go in data-U, afsk)

Flrig 1.3.15 was crashing in data-U, The fix was Flrig 1.3.15ATa and I understand it will be in the next release. 1.3.16 Thanks Dave!

I am up and running. Fldigi works fine with this equipment.
I worked Puerto Rico w 10 watts on attic antenna:

What worked for me:

Running ubuntu 14.04 with Fldigi 3.21.80 and Flrig 1.3.15.ATa (use latest issue 1.3.16) FTDX 1200 & SCU 17.

Ubuntu has the driver that the SCU manual talks about downloading if you are using windows.)

Just wanted to offer an existence proof that this works. Thanks to all who responded.

Yes, I have the connections per the references you sent. USB from PC
to SCU 17, RS232 & other cable SCU 17 to rig, like they show. Rig
control working ok.
I just went to the Yaesu web page, you do need both. Sorry, my mistake.

Running ubuntu 14.04 with Fldigi and Flrig, FTDX 1200 & SCU 17.
Have rig control, waterfall, decoding but need to figure out how to
set up to operate RTTY.
What arrangements are used to operate RTTY with this equipment?
